The Tale Behind the Shirt
The forest path turned sharply and abruptly left the wood, depositing Dave and Andrew into a sun-filled field. They stood frozen when they reached the light. Although they’d walked this same path, stood in this same mountaintop meadow at least one hundred times before, they never saw what now stood mysteriously in front of them. A giant hand, a giant tree that is, which had grown into the shape of a human hand, loomed high in front of them.
“It’s a…it’s a, um peace sign,” Andrew said, quietly breaking the stunned silence.
“Huh?” Dave reacted, as if insulted, “No-o-o it’s a victory sign, V for victory!”
“Victory over what?” Andrew enquired, crossing his arms.
“Victory over everything! We win they lose,” Dave exclaimed raising his fingers in a V shape.
Andrew made the V sign and shoved it in front of Dave’s face, “Peace man, peace. Peace is way better than victory man.”
Dave swatted Andrew’s hand out of his face, “Hippie freak!”
“War monger!”
“You, flower child!”
“Militaristic pig!”
The words devolved into pushes and shoves, until they both found themselves rolling on the ground, wrestling each other while grunting out the words, “Peace!” and “Victory!”
Dust and bits of straw rose from the ground where they scuffled until after a couple of minutes they heard a loud, ear-splitting crack followed by a ground shaking thud. They stopped dead and looked up from the ground. The index finger of the tree had inexplicably broken off, leaving one finger raised high in the air, as if directed straight at the both of them. They raised themselves off the ground and dusted themselves off like two embarrassed children caught doing something naughty.
Dave and Andrew looked at the finger, then looked at each other and took ownership of their own stupidity. With relief, they began to chuckle at themselves until they were doubled over laughing under the long shadow of the finger.
