The Tale Behind the Shirt
The air was the colour of late dusk. There was just barely enough dark grey light to expose the craggy texture of the tunnel wall, but it was light nonetheless. I followed one path, but the grey light soon faded to deepest black so I turned back to where the darkness was a bit brighter. Turning a corner, a misty shaft of sun light pierced the air shining a bright spot on the wall. Following the light’s trajectory, I found its source. A brilliant, blinding light spilling out of a portal in the tunnel wall. I’d reached the end of the tunnel.
Passing through the doorway and into the light, I looked up squinting as the light nearly blinded me. I smiled as I allowed the light to bathe my face in warmth and kindness. As my eyes adjusted I felt the smile leave my face.
This was not the end of the tunnel.
I was in a deep cylindrical hole and the light was far, far above my head. From here, the exit was unreachable. This was simply a vast courtyard within the tunnel. A deep stony enclave that gave only a taste of the light to be had. Across from the dark shaft I just exited, lay another tunnel.
I stayed and basked in the light above my head relishing every bright moment until the sun passed. Then I entered the new tunnel. The air was the colour of late dusk. There was just barely enough dark grey light to expose the craggy texture of the tunnel wall but it was light nonetheless…
