The Tale Behind the Shirt
Well, we made it through the long winter. I won’t lie to you it was bleak, dark and hopeless and I often wondered if we’d make it through alive.
But now spring was here, the sun was shining and the streams were gushing with water. Things were looking up once again.
The little ones were up and about stretching their gangly legs walking around like a bunch of drunks on a Saturday night. Now it was time to leave the valley and head up to the mountains for the summer. Ah wilderness!
By the time we’d reached the base of the mountain, night had fallen and the stars all took their places in the sky.
We set up camp in the wood on the edge of a meadow and the missus sent me off to forage up some munchies for dinner. I pranced and dashed through the brush, leapt over fallen trees, trotting at full speed until I found myself in a strange clearing.
I came to a dead stop.
The forest canopy had disappeared and the stars were clear up above. The ground was strangely hard under my hooves, they made a clomping sound as I walked instead of the usual crunch of the forest floor. Behind me came a whooshing sound, I spun around and was nearly blinded by two bright lights speeding towards me. It was too late to move so I stood firm and braced myself for the impact and all that would follow.
The lights came to a sudden halt just inches away from my chest, I heard two slams, shadows then the sounds of footsteps running towards me.
“He’s ok! He’s ok!” I heard a voice call.
“Wow he was lucky.”
One of the shadows ran back and reappeared with a whole crate full of carrots. They dropped them in front of me. Without much thought I dragged the box to the edge of the wood and the lights whooshed off until there was silence once again.
I looked up at the sky, the stars never looked more beautiful, the silence never sounded so comforting. I called into the forest for my family to come and eat these good carrots. I heard their familiar chatter as they got closer and I smiled.
